News from the City of Ankeny

Picture
In recent years, the Ankeny Airport has grown and become busier in lockstep with the City of Ankeny's development.  The City's  current Airport Capital Improvements Program has a significant number of projects that support the continued growth of the airport.  The major highlights include:

  • North Property Line Box Hangars:  There is an overall shortage of aircraft hangars in Iowa according to the Iowa DOT.  We recently completed the construction of two box hangars on the far north line of the airport, and will be constructing two more box hangars in 2025.  These hangars are partially financed by the Iowa DOT funding and are leased to aircraft owners on an annual basis.

  • Taxiway D Box Hangar Development:  Starting in 2018, the PCAA developed an area for new hangars along the southwest side of the airport by extending an access roadway, utilities and aircraft apron.  The hangars built here are privately owned by individuals or companies who sign a 50-year land lease on the underlying property.  By the end of 2025, all of the available hangar pads will be leased and have new hangars on them.

  • Runway 18/36 Reconstruction:  Our main runway, which is over a mile long and 100 feet wide, is aged and deteriorated.  It requires a lot of regular maintenance and emergency patching to keep it in operation.  We are currently designing a full reconstruction of the runway, which is scheduled for 2026.  The majority of this $18 million project will be funded by an FAA grant.  If the PCAA is able to secure an additional federal grant, the runway will be extended by 500 feet to the north.  This will allow a larger class of jet aircraft to utilize the airport.  This project would also be completed in 2026 and carries a $4 million estimated cost.

  • The Ankeny Regional Airport is fortunate to be located so closely to Interstate 35.  All facilities at the airport are currently accessed from the Oralabor Road interchange and SE Convenience Boulevard.  However, space for any additional development at the current airport is severely limited.  The PCAA has been planning on developing a South Corporate Terminal Area for a number of years.  This 35-acre area would be built out with hangar buildings, possibly an new terminal building and other facilities as business growth dictates.  The South Corporate Terminal Area will be accessed from the SE Corporate Woods interstate interchange The first phase of this development is currently scheduled for 2027.  It will include the construction of two tee-hangar buildings to address the shortage of hangar spaces at the airport, as well as paving connections to the taxiways.

  • Completing a new signing project at the airport.  It includes a monument sign in the entrance round-about and a large sign along the interstate.  A sign along the interstate was completed recently.  Ultimately, both will be lighted signs.

Help Support Local Families this Holiday Season

Are you familiar with the Ankeny Service Center? This amazing group coordinates services and referrals for residents of Ankeny and Polk County. Lead by Sarah Wiser, Executive Director, they exist to serve the underserved in our community by meeting immediate needs, as well as providing a path to success. They are located at 641 S Ankeny Blvd, Ankeny.

Every year the Ankeny Service Center holds a Community Holiday Assistance Program. This program provides gifts to area families, children and seniors. The program is very popular and fills up fast with generous donors adopting families and seniors, however, you can still help. The Ankeny Area Chamber of Commerce has sponsored 3 wonderful families through the Ankeny Service Center Holiday Assistance Program. There are still several slots open, so please click here to sign up and purchase a gift for a family member. Drop off your gift to the Ankeny Chamber office before Monday, November 25. Please contact Diane Weber with any questions or for more information

Your generosity will help a local family have a very happy holiday this year!
